The Situation
Government owned assets, whether stockpiled in military depots or in use around the world, must be labeled and reported to the UID Registry. This logistical challenge cuts across numerous functions within the military hierarchy. While there is no government contract at stake, the streamlining of legacy property is a high priority with Congress and the GSA.
Whether you’re handling Government Furnished Property (GFP) or legacy property, the requirement to initially submit all property to the DoD will most likely start with the transmission of a virtual UID. Then you’ll have a need to convert the virtual UIDs to a machine- readable 2D Data Matrix bar code that meets MIL STD 130 requirements. Finally, all that property and equipment will need to be linked together in a parent-child relationship with additional custody reference data.
Since the information systems all feed a common UID Registry, the UID data elements must be clear and unambiguous. The Unique Identification data, along with its acquisition data, embedded data, custody data, and UID marking data must be submitted to the UID Registry or Wide Area Workflow (WAWF) to meet the precise schema represented in the UID Registry requirements.
