Peter Collins, President of A2B

There’s an old saying that says: “Once you’re over the hill, you pick up speed.” UID and RFID are over the hills of doubt and resistance, and indeed they are picking up speed. Compliance has evolved enormously since the concept of tracking serialized assets was first introduced by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics back in 2003. We have seen the DoD and its suppliers go from doubt and resistance, to vague interest, to an understanding of the benefits, to willing participants and co-creators of this methodology for realizing unheard of efficiencies in the military and beyond.

Needless to say there is plenty of expertise to go around here at A2B. So from time to time you will be hearing from me or one of our experts who will keep you posted on relevant UID, RFID and AIT topics.

Our intention is to help you stay abreast of unfolding requirements and understand what they mean to you. We also want you to count on us for data management education. And we also want to assist you in sorting through compliance options, including marking choices and software system considerations.

When we started the year, the March 2011 UID Forum in Orlando Florida www.uidforum.com seemed so far away. Now we’re only two week away from the debut of numerous and exciting IUID products and services that have been developed for the DoD and DoD contractor enterprise. Here are my top three picks: (Read More)

UID = ROI

A2B Tracking - Thursday, February 10, 2011

If the military recognizes the huge return on investment (ROI) of UID, it stands to reason that contractors who are implementing UID should be able to reap similar benefits on a smaller scale. It’s time to get creative and put those UID’s to work. Here’s what the DoD has discovered:  (Read More)

Observations from AIM Expo

A2B Tracking - Monday, November 29, 2010

When someone asked me, “How was AIM Expo?” I immediately replied, “It was like getting the band back together.” This kind of attendance from veteran auto ID professionals and practitioners is exactly what the rebirth of this industry event needed. There was a level of excitement that I hadn’t seen at an auto ID conference in years. (Read More)

Smart Phone Devices and Auto ID

A2B Tracking - Friday, November 19, 2010

I read the October 20th issue of the AIM Connections Newsletter, titled “The Mobile Workforce: Is There an App for That?” with great interest. Editor Bert Moore gave us his perspective on smart phone devices, the mobile workforce and Auto ID. I agree with Bert’s prediction that smart phone devices will play an increasingly important role as data capture devices. We know that convenience is a huge motivator for relying upon these devices. The fact is that we have all but replaced our reliance on desktop and laptop computers for email or “unstructured” data entry. (Read More)

Why UID is Critical the USAF Expeditionary Logistics for the 21st Century (eLog21)

A2B Tracking - Friday, October 15, 2010

What is eLog21? Here is an explanation from the eLog21 web site: “Expeditionary Logistics for the 21st Century…integrates and governs logistics transformation initiatives to ensure the warfighter receives the right support at the right place and the right time”. To learn more visit: http://www.af.mil/information/elog21/index.asp

My interpretation is that having equipment ready (or maintaining readiness) while managing costs is the highest priority. The message cites a logistical imperative for clear and consistent system transparency. That means that easily captured, highly accurate data on all systems and parts is critical. Enter UID. (Read More)
